Frequently Asked Questions

What is a licensed midwife?

A licensed midwife is a trained medical professional that specializes in prenatal care, labor, physiologic birth and postpartum care. A licensed midwife provides evidence-based, holistic care.  Midwives also provide comprehensive care, share decision making, and provide autonomy to individuals and their families. Licensed midwives typically work outside of the hospital providing home birth or birth center services for low-risk pregnancies. Midwives follow the midwifery model of care which is a safe and effective model for healthy, low-risk pregnancies. Midwives assess risk throughout a mama’s pregnancy based on a risk screening tool.

Who is able to have a homebirth?

In the state of Florida, if you have a healthy, low-risk pregnancy then you are a good candidate for a homebirth. Factors like gestational diabetes, a twin pregnancy, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, a chronic illness that requires medication would require an OB for higher level of care and therefore not make you a good candidate. We can assess risk further during a consultation.

Are midwives and doulas the same?

Midwives and doulas are NOT the same. Doulas provide constant (in most cases) emotional, educational, and physical support to pregnant and postpartum families in and out of the hospital. They do not provide medical examinations, medical care, or medical support. They are an advocate for families. Midwives are professional healthcare providers providing medical care much like a doctor. Midwives and doulas work great together and Midwife Doniece is a big fan of doulas especially for first time parents.

Can I have a waterbirth?

Yes you can! In fact, there are a lot of benefits to birthing and laboring in the water. We offer a pool rental service for $200. Included in this fee is the birth pool, tub setup, filling of the tub, and breakdown/cleaning of the tub. Not included is the tub liner. You can also birth in your own tub or buy your own birth tub. Here is a great link to evidence on waterbirth.

What if I'm already seeing an OB? Can I still have a homebirth?

Yes you can still have a homebirth and midwifery care as long as you're having a low risk pregnancy. Transferring care to a midwife from another provider is very easy. We would just need a signed Release of Medical Records form from you and we can start off where you left off with your previous provider.

What if there is an emergency in labor?

Midwives are extensively trained, prepared, and able to recognize if obstetric emergencies should arise. Your midwife will have oxygen, IV supplies, anti-hemorrhagic medications, suturing supplies, and tools to assess mom and baby at your birth in case of an emergency. Your midwife is also trained in NRP and BLS/CPR. Your midwife will not hesitate to facilitate a transfer to the hospital, if needed. You will be transferred via EMS and your midwife will accompany you in the unlikely event of an emergency. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹
